Marjorie Goodfellow, a name synonymous
with health care services
for English-speaking Townshippers,
is spearheading a first ever Englishlanguage
radiothon to raise funds for the
Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke.
Goodfellow has enlisted the support
of CBC radio and popular Quebec AM
host Tim Belford, as well as prominent
business and educational leaders in the
community and local media in a bid to raise
$50,000 for the regional hospital.
The radiothon will be broadcast live
from the cafeteria of the CHUS Fleurimont
on CBC radio, 91.7 FM, Nov. 7 during
Belford’s Quebec AM morning show,
Radio Noon and Breakaway in the afternoon.
“I learned of a similar effort by the minority-
language community in St. Bonifice
which was very successful,” said Goodfellow,
a longtime member of the CHUS
Foundation.
“According to recent statistics, there are
24,000 English-speaking people living in
the traditional Eastern Townships and another
30,000 within the regional network
who use the services of the hospital,” she
added.
Goodfellow said a second purpose of the
radiothon is to inform English-speaking
Townshippers of the new technology, research,
health care services and job opportunities
available at ‘their’ hospital.
“Out theme is ‘Make this hospital
yours’,” Goodfellow said.
CHUS Fondation manager Michel
Fortin pointed out that some 1,800 Englishspeaking
people have already made donations
to the foundation and he is hoping
they will contribute again to the radiothon.
Tim Belford said CBC has embraced the
opportunity to play a role in the development
and maintenance of the community’s
institutions.
“We will ask for money, but we will also
hear from staff, administrators, users,
reasearchers and others who will talk about
their experiences,” Belford said.
David McBride who is leading the radiothon’s
financial committee noted it is
easy to take the hospital for granted but we
should pause to realize how fortunate we
are to have a world class hospital like the
CHUS in our midst. “For this region to survive
and flourish, we must continue to support
our institutions,” McBride said.
