Hatley is a village of 700 people, part of the Memphrémagog Regional
County Municipality in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec. An
otherwise quiet and tiny agricultural village, one of Hatley’s main claims
to fame is its annual Canada Day Celebration which always takes place on
July 1st. Along with a parade (featuring horses, floats, antique cars,
tractors, children on decorated bikes and any number of other entrants),
the day includes games for children, artisan vendors, a book sale,
community lunch, local performers, and ends off with a fireworks display.
The family of Mr Stanley Whitcomb, including his daughters and his
grandchildren, led the parade for several decades.

one of the oldest, and largest per capita Canada Day events in Quebec.
This year the small village will mark its 100th Canada Day
celebration.

Hatley’s application for funding in February to respect the Feb. 29

New English weekly
for Townships
Outlet publisher Sharon McCully has teamed up with Knowlton
businessman Peter White, a veteran of the newspaper business, to produce a
regional weekly newspaper for the English-speaking community of the
Eastern Townships.
The new publication, to be called The Townships Outlet, will capitalize
on the popularity of the Magog-based monthly Outlet, while expanding
coverage to other areas of the Townships.
“This will be a community newspaper in the strictest sense of the word,”
said McCully, a former president of PLEASE SEE PAGE 3 |
